About this place
Chodang Catholic Church is the church of St. Joseph Parish, Chodang, in the Yeongdong District of the Diocese of Chuncheon, with St. Joseph as its patron saint. It serves Catholics in Chodang-dong and the surrounding areas of Gangneung as a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, and is a relatively young parish that developed alongside the growth of new residential districts.
The church is especially notable for the artistic character of its liturgical space. Its interior uses bright tones associated with life and resurrection; twelve columns around a circular courtyard evoke the Twelve Apostles; and a cross near the sanctuary emphasizes the image of the risen and ascending Christ. This design makes the building more than a gathering hall, shaping it as a sacred space in which the meaning of the liturgy is experienced through architecture.
History & origins
Chodang Parish was established on March 1, 1996, after being separated from Okcheondong Parish. At the time, high-rise apartments and new residential areas were expanding around Chodang-dong, Songjeong-dong, and Gyeongpo, increasing the number of Catholics served by Okcheondong and creating the need for a new parish.
Bishop John of the Cross Chang planned a new church on land that had already been secured, envisioning a sacred building in harmony with the surrounding sea and pine trees. Architects and artists were involved from the design stage so that liturgy and architecture would form a unified spatial experience.
The church was completed according to this vision and dedicated on April 8, 2002. Its colors, the twelve columns, and the cross emphasizing the Resurrection still convey the original design concept. The establishment of the parish and construction of the church together reflect the formation of a new Catholic community as the eastern residential area of Gangneung expanded.
