About this place

Cheongpyeong Catholic Church is the church of St. Lawrence Parish, Cheongpyeong, in the Namchuncheon District of the Diocese of Chuncheon, with St. Lawrence as its patron saint. It is the parish center where Catholics in the Cheongpyeong area of Gapyeong gather for Mass, the sacraments, and community life, maintaining a local Catholic presence within a region linking the Seoul metropolitan area and inland Gangwon.

Today the parish serves as the basic Catholic community in which local faithful learn the faith, participate in the liturgy, and build relationships with their neighbors. Having continued through changes in local population and diocesan jurisdiction, it is also a place where the modern Catholic history of Cheongpyeong remains connected to the community's present life of faith.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Cheongpyeong developed from the Cheongpyeong mission station under Yangpyeong Parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul and was elevated to a parish on October 7, 1953. At the time, at the request of U.S. forces stationed in Cheongpyeong, Father Yun Eul-su became involved with the Chinaewon orphanage and later served both as its director and as pastor of Cheongpyeong Parish, deepening ties with the local Catholic community.

Even after becoming a parish, the community had no independent church and used the orphanage auditorium. As the number of faithful grew, construction of a church began on August 10, 1955, and the church was blessed on December 18 of the same year.

On November 19, 1969, a jurisdictional reorganization transferred Cheongpyeong Parish from the Archdiocese of Seoul to the Diocese of Chuncheon. As the community continued to grow, a new church was built and dedicated on December 15, 1986, with Bishop Thomas presiding. This history traces the development of a postwar local Catholic community into an established parish and the church used today.
