About this place
Cheonghodong Catholic Church is the church of Star of the Sea Parish, Cheonghodong, in the Yeongbuk District of the Diocese of Chuncheon. Its patronal title is “Star of the Sea,” and the Catholic community developed within Cheonghodong, Sokcho, where many displaced people settled after the Korean War. The parish is the center where local Catholics continue their life of Mass, sacraments, catechesis, and community.
Because Cheonghodong itself carries memories of division and displacement, the church has significance beyond that of a religious facility alone. It is a place where a community of faith has lived across generations while facing the sea and the northern homeland, and the title “Star of the Sea” resonates naturally with the coastal identity of the area.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Cheonghodong began as a mission station under Gyodong Parish. As Sokcho urbanized and Gyodong Parish grew, the need for a separate parish increased. The community became a quasi-parish on November 1, 1991, and was elevated to a parish in 1994.
Its patronal title as a quasi-parish was “Queen of Peace.” After becoming a parish, it was changed to “the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph.” During the process of building a new church, the parish renewed its identity once more, adopting “Star of the Sea” as its patronal title in 2015.
The present church was dedicated on August 24, 2015, with Bishop Lucas Kim Woon-hoe presiding. The development from mission station to quasi-parish and parish, followed by the construction of a new church, reflects the growth of the Catholic community alongside demographic changes in Cheonghodong.
