About this place
Cheondori Mission Station belongs to Wontong Parish in the Diocese of Chuncheon and is a local Catholic community where the faithful of Seohwa-myeon in Inje gather for Mass and prayer. The Catholic Directory of Korea records its establishment in January 1967, while a 2016 diocesan report confirms the Cheondori mission station at Cheondoro 98beon-gil in Seohwa-myeon as a community under Wontong Parish.
Unlike a parish with a resident priest, a mission station sustains Catholic life through visits by the parish priest and the shared responsibility of local faithful. After renovation in 2016, Cheondori had a worship space, a priest’s residence, and a fellowship room for the community. Its central role is to help Catholics living far from the parish church in the wide Inje region continue their liturgical life and community fellowship.
History & origins
Cheondori Mission Station was established in January 1967 and became a Catholic community for the faithful of Seohwa-myeon in Inje. A mission-station building was erected in 1969 and served for many years as the place for Mass, prayer, and gatherings of the local Catholics.
After several decades the building had become seriously aged, and inadequate insulation made it increasingly difficult for the community to use comfortably. The faithful therefore undertook a renovation that renewed the existing mission station rather than abandoning the long-used place of worship.
In June 2016 Bishop Luke Kim Woon-hoe of Chuncheon presided at the blessing of the renovated Cheondori Mission Station. The renewed facility, measuring about 180 square meters, included the worship space, a priest’s residence, and a fellowship room called the “Hwaham Room.” The renovation and blessing, nearly half a century after the community’s establishment, show how a small mountain community preserved and renewed its own place of faith across generations.
