About this place

Bangsan Mission Station is a Catholic mission station belonging to Haian St. Luke Parish of the Diocese of Chuncheon. It serves as a local center where Catholics in Bangsan-myeon, Yanggu County, remain connected with their parish community and continue their life of faith. The Diocese of Chuncheon lists Bangsan under Haian Parish, whose pastoral territory includes Bangsan-myeon.

In an area distant from the parish church, a mission station provides a place where the faithful can pray together, celebrate Mass, and sustain community ties. Bangsan Mission Station fulfills this role within the pastoral care of Haian Parish. Because the present community was re-established after an earlier closure, the site also reflects the persistence and renewal of Catholic life in a border-region community.

History & origins

The Catholic community at Bangsan experienced both interruption and rebuilding before reaching its present form. According to the history of Haian Parish published by the Diocese of Chuncheon, the earlier Bangsan Mission Station was closed on February 9, 2000. Efforts to restore a local place for the faith community later led to the construction of a new hall, which was dedicated on November 27, 2010.

Using this new facility, Bangsan Mission Station was re-established on March 1, 2012, under Yanggu Parish. On March 1 of the following year, Haian Mission Station was elevated to Haian St. Luke Parish, and Bangsan together with Dongmyeon Mission Station was transferred from Yanggu Parish to the newly established parish. Bangsan thus continued its life of faith within a new pastoral structure covering Haian-myeon, Bangsan-myeon, and Dongmyeon.

This history shows that the continuity of the mission station did not depend simply on the survival of a building. Its community passed through closure, re-establishment, and a change of parish jurisdiction in response to local pastoral needs and changes in diocesan organization.
