About this place
Aemakgol Catholic Church is a parish of the Chuncheon District in the Diocese of Chuncheon and is dedicated to the Korean martyr St. Paul Chong Hasang. It was established as eastern Chuncheon, especially Seoksa-dong and surrounding residential districts, expanded rapidly. The new parish enabled Catholics living in recently built apartment complexes to celebrate Mass and the sacraments within their own local community.
The parish’s foundation was also connected with Bishop Chang Yik’s pastoral emphasis on smaller local communities. Rather than allowing an ever-growing number of Catholics to remain concentrated in a large urban parish, the Diocese created a community closer to the faithful’s everyday living area. The church therefore represents a distinct liturgical and pastoral center formed through Chuncheon’s urban growth and the development of a new local Catholic community.
History & origins
Aemakgol Parish was established as the number of Catholics in Hupyeong-dong Parish continued to grow and new apartment complexes expanded across the Seoksa-dong area, creating the need for another parish. On September 1, 1998, the Diocese of Chuncheon separated the new community from Hupyeong-dong Parish and established Aemakgol Parish, placing it under the patronage of St. Paul Chong Hasang.
In its early period, the parish used a prefabricated building as a temporary church while organizing the new community. Parishioners then prepared to build a permanent church, and in March 2000 the cornerstone was laid at the present site, marking the start of full construction.
On December 8 of the same year, the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Bishop Chang Yik presided at the dedication of the new church. The roughly two-year period from parish foundation to church dedication coincided with the establishment of a new Catholic community in a rapidly growing residential area of eastern Chuncheon.
