Yongwon Mission Station is a Catholic mission station of the Diocese of Cheongju in Sinni-myeon, Chungju. It is presently served pastorally by Judeok Parish, where local Catholics continue their life of faith. The Diocese of Cheongju lists Yongwon Mission Station at its current location, and Judeok Parish's liturgical schedule also confirms that Mass is celebrated there on a regular basis.
Unlike a parish with a resident priest, a mission station is a smaller Catholic community where a priest from the parish comes to celebrate Mass and local faithful continue prayer and community life. Yongwon Mission Station continues to serve this purpose in the Sinni-myeon area, helping Catholics who live across a dispersed rural area remain connected with the parish and sustain their sacramental and communal life of faith.
History & origins
The verifiable history of Yongwon Mission Station reaches back to 1965. A report conveying the results of a 2024 basic survey of Catholic heritage conducted by Chungcheongbuk-do records both the establishment year and the construction year of Yongwon Mission Station as 1965 and identifies the same mission station at its present location on Sindeok-ro in Sinni-myeon. According to this record, the community was established and its mission-station building was provided in the same year.
No continuous official chronology has been located that would allow later construction, expansion, or jurisdictional changes to be described in detail. The Diocese of Cheongju, however, still lists Yongwon as a mission station today, and Judeok Parish's liturgical schedule shows that Mass continues to be celebrated there. The history that can presently be established therefore extends from the mission station founded in 1965, through its continued role as a local Catholic community, to its present pastoral connection with Judeok Parish.
