About this place

Yonghwa Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Yonghwa-myeon, Yeongdong-gun, and a local faith community presently served by Haksan Parish in the Diocese of Cheongju. The Diocese's official list of mission stations records Yonghwa Mission Station at its current location, while Haksan Parish's liturgical schedule confirms that Mass is regularly celebrated there.

In an area such as Yonghwa-myeon, some distance from the parish church, a mission station gives Catholics a nearby place to pray together and participate in Mass. Yonghwa is not an independent parish but a mission-station community connected with Haksan Parish, and its significance lies in sustaining the sacramental and communal life of local Catholics.

History & origins

Yonghwa Mission Station is documented as having been established in 1957. A pilgrimage research publication prepared by the Honam Institute of Church History and made available through the Diocese of Jeonju identifies Yonghwa Mission Station in Yonghwa-myeon, Yeongdong-gun, records its establishment in 1957, and states that it belongs to Haksan Parish of the Diocese of Cheongju. Current records of the Diocese of Cheongju identify the same mission station in the same area, supporting continuity of the place.

Reliable sources do not provide a continuous account of later construction, relocation, or jurisdictional changes. Haksan Parish's current schedule does, however, explicitly include Mass at Yonghwa Mission Station, confirming that the community formed in the 1950s remains connected with parish ministry today. Without adding unsupported intermediate events, the history of Yonghwa Mission Station can therefore be traced from its establishment in 1957 through its continuing life as a local Catholic community.
