About this place
‘용암동 성당’ is the parish church of a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Cheongju and is the local center where Catholics in the 용암동 area celebrate Mass and the sacraments and take part in catechesis, fellowship, and service. The Diocese of Cheongju identifies St. Joseph as the parish patron and continues to administer the community as an independent parish.
The church’s central role is to sustain the ordinary liturgical and communal life of local Catholics within their own living area. It is not a shrine or a religious-institute facility centered on a separate purpose of visitation, but a parish church where the faithful share Sunday and weekday Catholic life. ‘용암동 성당’ is therefore best understood primarily through its present local pastoral and community role.
History & origins
용암동본당 was established by separation from 영운동본당 as the latter community grew. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea entry on 영운동 records that on June 29, 1994, 용암동본당 was separated and established, with the records of 1,128 Catholics transferred from 영운동 to the new parish. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current parish listing confirms the same establishment date.
This division formed part of the continued growth of 영운동본당, itself established in 1987, as the Catholic population of southeastern Cheongju increased. Creating an independent parish in 용암동 allowed the faithful to form a distinct pastoral community closer to their own residential area and required a corresponding adjustment of 영운동’s territory.
용암동 has continued as an independent parish and remains listed by the Diocese of Cheongju with the same establishment date and St. Joseph as patron. Its beginning is an example of the subdivision of parish territories that accompanied the expansion of urban Cheongju in the 1990s.
