The 맹동 parish branch of The Institute of Kkottongnae Brothers of Jesus is a religious community located at the same site as the parish in 맹동 in the Diocese of Cheongju and closely connected with parish ministry. The official directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea lists it as a branch of the Institute within the Diocese of Cheongju and gives 41-17 대동로, 맹동면, 음성군 as its representative address. The directory also links responsibility for the branch with “parish ministry,” showing that this is not merely a separate residence for religious life but a base where the community serves alongside the local parish.
The Institute of Kkottongnae Brothers of Jesus grew from Kkottongnae’s mission of serving poor and marginalized people. The 맹동 parish branch can be understood as a place where that religious charism is expressed within the liturgical and pastoral life of a local parish. Its defining feature is the close connection, at one location, between an ordinary parish community and a branch of a religious institute.
History & origins
According to Kkottongnae’s official chronology, the Catholic parish in 맹동 was newly established on August 17, 2010, and a priest of The Institute of Kkottongnae Brothers of Jesus was assigned there at the same time. This record helps explain how the community now listed as the “맹동 parish branch” came to be closely integrated with the pastoral life of the parish in 맹동.
On April 29, 2018, the dedication of the the 맹동 성모탄신 성당 was held together with the blessing of the Kkottongnae monastery. Kkottongnae’s official chronology records the two events together, confirming that the parish church and the religious community’s local base were developed in close connection.
The current directory of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Korea still lists the “맹동 parish branch” of The Institute of Kkottongnae Brothers of Jesus as a distinct branch and links its responsibility with parish ministry. However, the publicly available official sources do not provide a separate founding date for the branch itself, so the parish’s establishment in 2010 should not automatically be treated as the branch’s own founding date.
