Yegok Mission

History & origins

Official village information from Okcheon County records that Yegok Mission Station was established in 1955. Cheongsan Parish had not yet been established at that time, so the Catholic community of Yegok had already become a local center of faith before the creation of the parish that later served it. This record shows that Yegok is not simply a recently established liturgical site but a rural Catholic community whose roots reach back to the 1950s.

After Cheongsan Parish was established on September 1, 1959, by separating territory from Yeongdong and Okcheon parishes, Yegok came to be recorded among the mission stations under Cheongsan. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea lists Hwaseong, Yongsan, Wonnam, and Yegok as mission stations of Cheongsan Parish, showing the community's continued place within the parish's pastoral structure.

In the latter half of the 1990s, Cheongsan Parish undertook repairs to the Yegok mission-station building as part of efforts to strengthen its mission stations. This indicates that the parish continued working to preserve the Yegok community even as the demographic and pastoral conditions of rural areas were changing.

Today's Yegok Mission Station thus carries a history that includes its establishment in 1955, its later place under the newly established Cheongsan Parish, and subsequent maintenance of its facilities. Its historical significance lies in the long continuity of Catholic community life in a small village outside the parish center.
