History & origins

The Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres entered Korea in 1888 and began apostolic work that included care for orphans, education, health care, and social service. A direct connection with Gamgok can be documented in 1912, when the educational work of Gamgok Parish was expanding. Father Camille Bouillon, who had already established a school for boys at Janghowon Parish, sought to open education to girls but lacked teachers and therefore requested help from the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres in Seoul.

According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia's history of Maegoe School, two sisters arrived at Janghowon in October 1912 and took responsibility for the girls' school. They taught ordinary subjects as well as Catholic doctrine and played a major role in stabilizing the school. This mission is the earliest clearly documented point at which the congregation's educational apostolate in Gamgok became concrete.

The parish's educational work subsequently developed into Maegoe School and became an important part of Catholic education in the region. The congregation's current official apostolate page continues to name Gamgok among its domestic mission sites in the Diocese of Cheongju, and the national Catholic directory likewise records the Sisters of Saint Paul of Chartres as the congregation serving Gamgok Parish. These sources connect the early twentieth-century educational mission with the presence of a congregation community in Gamgok today.

Publicly available records do not, however, document every withdrawal, reassignment, or personnel change between 1912 and the present community. It would therefore be inaccurate to claim uninterrupted residence throughout the entire period. The most defensible historical line is the clearly documented beginning of the sisters' educational work in 1912 and the officially confirmed presence of their Gamgok mission today. Even with gaps in the intermediate chronology, multiple church-history sources consistently show the lasting importance of the sisters' educational work to the parish and local Catholic education.
