Sotae Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Sotae-myeon, Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do, within the Diocese of Cheongju. The official diocesan list confirms its current name and location, while the official page of Eomjeong Parish includes regular Masses at Sotae, confirming the present pastoral connection between the two communities.
A mission station is smaller than an independent parish, but in a living area such as Sotae-myeon, where the parish church may be some distance away, it provides an important nearby place for Catholics to gather, pray, and participate in Mass. The present Sotae Mission Station continues this role around its newer mission-station building. Visitors can understand it not merely as a small church structure, but as the home of a community that has sustained Catholic life in Sotae through changes in parish jurisdiction.
History & origins
Sotae Mission Station was established in 1961 under Mokhaeng Parish in the Diocese of Cheongju. A 2019 Catholic Times of Korea report on the blessing of the mission station confirms both the year of establishment and its original parish jurisdiction.
Over time its pastoral jurisdiction came to be connected with Eomjeong Parish, and the Sotae community prepared a new mission-station building while continuing its Catholic life. On October 19, 2019, Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong-hun of Cheongju presided over the blessing of the new mission station at 211 Sotae-ro, Sotae-myeon, Chungju. The blessing was an important transition for a community whose history reaches back to 1961, allowing its liturgy and gatherings to continue in a new space.
The current diocesan directory lists Sotae Mission Station at the same location, and Eomjeong Parish’s official information also confirms the celebration of Mass at Sotae. From its beginnings under Mokhaeng Parish to its present connection with Eomjeong Parish, the mission station has maintained the continuity of the local Catholic community through changes of jurisdiction.
