About this place
Songjeol-dong Church is a parish church of the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju in the Songjeol-ro area of Heungdeok-gu, Cheongju, Chungcheongbuk-do. The diocese lists it in the Heungdeok district, and the official parish directory identifies St. Vincent as its patron saint. It is the center of parish life where Catholics from Songjeol-dong and nearby neighborhoods continue their faith centered on Mass and the sacraments.
The present church building includes not only the church itself but also catechetical and meeting rooms and spaces for pastoral work, allowing liturgy and community activities to take place within one parish complex. This shows how a parish church is not only a place for celebrating Mass but also a setting for formation, fellowship, and pastoral care. Visitors can understand Songjeol-dong Church as a place that connects the everyday Catholic life of the area and as the center of a parish community under the patronage of St. Vincent.
History & origins
Songjeol-dong Parish was established on August 16, 2011, after separating from Sinbong-dong Parish. The official diocesan directory records the same date, and a 2019 Newsis report states that Fr. Andrew Park Chi-young arrived as the first pastor and the new parish community began its life.
In the early years, securing an independent church building became a major task. During the tenure of the second pastor, Fr. John the Apostle Lee Jun-yeon, a basic construction plan was prepared on April 6, 2016, and diocesan approval followed on November 8 of that year. Groundbreaking then took place on July 9, 2017, beginning the main construction phase.
The project was completed about one year and ten months later, and the new church was dedicated on May 11, 2019, in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong-hun of Cheongju. The basement and three above-ground floors provided the church, choir area, catechetical and meeting rooms, and office and pastoral spaces. The long process of planning and completing the church after the parish’s establishment marked the stage at which the Songjeol-dong community secured an independent base for liturgy and pastoral life.
