Sokri Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Sannae-ri, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, within the Diocese of Cheongju. Its current location appears in the official diocesan mission-station directory, and the official page of Boeun Parish also lists Mass at Sokri, confirming that it is presently connected with Boeun Parish.
Although the Songnisan area is widely known as a tourist destination, the mission station’s primary significance is not tourism but the continuing Catholic life of local believers. It illustrates the role of a mission station in providing a nearby place for liturgy and communal prayer across a broad rural and mountain living area, and it was formed as the Catholic community of the Boeun region extended into surrounding villages. Visitors can understand it as a small local center where Catholics in the Songnisan area have sustained everyday faith.
History & origins
The Catholic community in the Boeun region developed its faith base across a broad rural area through a network of mission stations. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Boeun Parish, the parish experienced a decline in the number of Catholics in the early 1970s; during the subsequent process of rebuilding community life, Sokri Mission Station was established in Sannae-ri, Naesongni-myeon, in October 1975.
The establishment of Sokri was part of Boeun Parish’s effort to maintain a pastoral presence beyond the parish center and into the surrounding mountain communities. Sokri continued as one of the mission stations of the Boeun area, and the current diocesan directory lists it at Sannae 1-gil, Songnisan-myeon, Boeun-gun. Boeun Parish’s present information also includes Mass at Sokri, confirming that the local liturgical center established in 1975 continues today.
