About this place
Soi Church is a parish church of the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju in Soi-myeon, Eumseong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do. The diocesan district listing places it in the Eumseong district, and the official parish directory identifies St. Gabriel as its patron saint. It is the liturgical and pastoral center where Catholics in the Soi area continue their life of faith centered on Mass and the sacraments.
Before becoming a parish, the community is documented as having served the area at the level of a mission station. Soi Church can therefore be understood both in its present status as a parish and as a continuation of the Diocese of Cheongju’s pastoral effort to establish accessible liturgical communities in rural living areas. For visitors, its importance lies less in size than in the fact that it provides a stable local place for Mass and communal Catholic life.
History & origins
In April 2015, the Diocese of Cheongju introduced guidelines for the pastoral ministry of priests assigned to mission stations and began using a new form of pastoral presence in rural areas. The Catholic Peace Weekly reported that four mission stations—Mokdo, Soi, Baekgok, and Chopyeong—emerged after these guidelines, confirming that the Soi community had formed a distinct local pastoral center as a mission station before becoming a parish.
The official diocesan parish directory records November 30, 2021, as the establishment date of Soi Parish. This marks the point at which the community that had continued at mission-station level became an official parish of the diocese. Taken together, the documented chronology shows Soi growing as a mission-station community within an effort to provide a closer pastoral presence in a rural area, and later becoming a parish that continues as the present pastoral unit.
