History & origins

The verifiable chronology of Simcheon Mission Station can be traced through a 2024 basic survey of Catholic martyrdom and pilgrimage sites and architectural assets conducted by Chungcheongbuk-do. The province stated that the survey identified nine Catholic holy sites and forty-one Catholic buildings more than fifty years old. In the published list summarizing the architectural heritage, Simcheon Mission Station in Yeongdong is recorded as having been established in 1958, with its building dating from 1961.

According to this material, the Catholic mission community in Simcheon took institutional form in the late 1950s and acquired a dedicated mission-station building a few years later. The space completed in 1961 can be understood as providing a local base where Catholics in a rural area, for whom travel to a parish church was difficult, could gather for prayer and liturgical life. The published survey table does not identify the individuals who led the foundation or describe the formation of the earliest community in detail, so those matters are not inferred here.

The current official list of the Diocese of Cheongju still records Simcheon Mission Station in Simcheon-myeon, Yeongdong-gun. Within the limits of the evidence, Simcheon can therefore be described as a local Catholic community that has continued to the present on the historical foundations of its 1958 establishment and 1961 building. The combination of an older mission-station building and continuing diocesan registration shows that this is not merely a remnant of the past but a place expressing continuity in local Catholic faith.
