Sepyeong Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Sepyeong-ri, Buljeong-myeon, Goesan-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do, within the Diocese of Cheongju. The diocesan directory of mission stations lists “Sepyeong” at its present location, confirming the continuing presence of a local Catholic community. It is a local center where a community smaller than a parish gathers for prayer and participation in the liturgy.
The significance of Sepyeong lies in the long, close relationship between village life and the faith community. Rather than functioning as a large facility or an independent parish, it reflects the typical character of a rural mission station where Catholics have known one another and sustained their faith within their own living area. Visitors can best understand the site not merely as a small church building, but as the place of a community that has handed on the faith in the Sepyeong area across generations.
History & origins
Sepyeong Mission Station was established in 1958. According to a Catholic Times of Korea report on the Catholic community in Sepyeong-ri, the mission station was closed for a time, although the local life of faith did not disappear entirely.
In 1976 the mission station was rededicated through the efforts of Joanna Jeon Geun and several other Catholics. Jeon served as the mission-station leader, lived there, and taught catechism to children, helping sustain the faith in the area. These efforts formed part of the process by which a closed mission station again became a center of community life.
Sepyeong has since continued as a place where faith is handed on across generations in a small rural community. Its listing in the current official directory of the Diocese of Cheongju confirms that the community, established in 1958 and rededicated in 1976, continues today.
