Sannam-dong Cathedral

History & origins

Sannam-dong Parish was established as urban development and changing residential patterns in the Sannam-dong area created a need for a new parish. The Diocese of Cheongju records January 23, 2007, as the date of establishment. In that period the diocese also adjusted parish boundaries in response to pastoral, geographic, and everyday living conditions in newly developed areas. The new community celebrated its first Mass in May of the same year, beginning its life as an active parish.

Because there was no completed permanent church at first, the parish worshiped in temporary facilities. According to the Catholic Times, a light-steel temporary church was prepared in October 2007. The community then began planning a permanent church and raised the necessary funds largely through Sunday collections and dedicated building offerings rather than relying on major outside assistance. This process enabled the young parish to build its own stable pastoral foundation.

On June 20, 2012, about five years after the parish was founded, Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong-hun presided at the dedication of the new church. The three-story building had a total floor area of 1,085.9 square meters and a building footprint of 497.6 square meters, with the church, offices, and meeting rooms needed for parish life. The move from a temporary chapel to a permanent church marked the community’s transition from its founding stage to a settled local parish.

The dedication represented more than the completion of a building. It brought to a close the first phase in which a new Catholic community began in temporary space and, through the offerings of its members, created a permanent place for worship and gathering. Sannam-dong thus records a characteristic pattern of urban pastoral development in the Diocese of Cheongju in the 2000s: a parish was established in a newly formed residential area and within a relatively short period built the stable liturgical and communal facilities needed for long-term ministry.
