Sangchon Mission

Sangchon Mission Station is a Catholic community in Sangchon-myeon, Yeongdong-gun, officially listed by the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju. The history of Hwanggan Parish in the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia and recent diocesan materials on the mission-station apostolate identify Sangchon as a mission station under Hwanggan Parish. Located in the mountainous and rural southeastern part of Yeongdong-gun, it serves as a local center where Catholics living away from the parish church can gather for prayer and remain connected with parish life.

Its present communal role is visible in a retreat held at Sangchon Mission Station in 2024 and reported by the Diocese of Cheongju. The diocesan Mission Pastoral Office's mission-station apostolate organized talks, group activities, a foot-washing rite, and Mass there, with participants reflecting on becoming a “community of service.” This shows that Sangchon is not merely an old building or a place name, but an active Catholic space where mission-station Catholics and the wider diocesan community still gather for prayer and fellowship. The combination of parish-centered sacramental life and the close fellowship characteristic of a mission station also illustrates why such communities remain important in sparsely populated mountain regions.
