About this place
Samseung Catholic Church is the parish church of Samseung Parish in the Southern District of the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju, serving the Catholic community of Samseung-myeon in Boeun-gun. The diocese identifies Saint Gabriel the Archangel as the parish patron. Although it is a relatively small rural parish, it provides the ordinary framework for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life, and forms one part of the Catholic presence in the Boeun area.
The parish's character is also visible in its continuing relationship with the local community beyond the church building. The Diocese of Cheongju reports that since 2020 the parish has provided annual scholarships to students of Pandong Elementary School and has shared snacks with local public institutions around Easter and Christmas. These practices show Samseung Parish functioning both as a community of Catholic faith and as a local community that maintains steady ties with its neighbors. Its patron, Saint Gabriel the Archangel, also gives the parish a fitting spiritual image of being sent to proclaim the Good News and express faith through everyday service.
History & origins
Samseung Parish was established by the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju on August 17, 2010. On the same day, the diocese simultaneously established five parishes—Maengdong, Eomjeong, Samseung, Seocheongju, and Mansu—an event recorded as the first time in diocesan history that several parishes were erected together on one date. The creation of Samseung Parish was part of a pastoral reorganization that enabled Catholics in Samseung-myeon, Boeun-gun, to live a parish-centered Catholic life closer to home. Saint Gabriel the Archangel was chosen as patron. The new parish also illustrates the diocese's effort to create a distinct pastoral structure within a rural living area.
After the parish was established, the community continued working toward a church building of its own. On April 27, 2016, Bishop Jang Bong-hun presided over the blessing of the new church at the present site. The Catholic Times reported that the new building stood on a site of about 3,295 square meters and had a building area of about 541 square meters. This was an important turning point for a community that, after several years of formation, gained a stable physical center for liturgy and parish gatherings.
Once the church was established, the parish also broadened its relationship with the surrounding community. According to diocesan records, it has awarded annual scholarships to students at Pandong Elementary School since 2020 and has shared refreshments with local public institutions around Easter and Christmas. Even as a small rural parish, it has thus expressed its faith concretely through education and care for its neighbors.
The history of Samseung Catholic Church can therefore be traced through the erection of the parish in 2010, the completion and blessing of its new church in 2016, and the continuing practices of local service that followed. Within a relatively short history, the parish's development from a newly created pastoral unit into a community with its own church and broader local relationships is clearly documented.
