Samseung Catholic Church

History & origins

Samseung Parish was established by the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju on August 17, 2010. On the same day, the diocese simultaneously established five parishes—Maengdong, Eomjeong, Samseung, Seocheongju, and Mansu—an event recorded as the first time in diocesan history that several parishes were erected together on one date. The creation of Samseung Parish was part of a pastoral reorganization that enabled Catholics in Samseung-myeon, Boeun-gun, to live a parish-centered Catholic life closer to home. Saint Gabriel the Archangel was chosen as patron. The new parish also illustrates the diocese's effort to create a distinct pastoral structure within a rural living area.

After the parish was established, the community continued working toward a church building of its own. On April 27, 2016, Bishop Jang Bong-hun presided over the blessing of the new church at the present site. The Catholic Times reported that the new building stood on a site of about 3,295 square meters and had a building area of about 541 square meters. This was an important turning point for a community that, after several years of formation, gained a stable physical center for liturgy and parish gatherings.

Once the church was established, the parish also broadened its relationship with the surrounding community. According to diocesan records, it has awarded annual scholarships to students at Pandong Elementary School since 2020 and has shared refreshments with local public institutions around Easter and Christmas. Even as a small rural parish, it has thus expressed its faith concretely through education and care for its neighbors.

The history of Samseung Catholic Church can therefore be traced through the erection of the parish in 2010, the completion and blessing of its new church in 2016, and the continuing practices of local service that followed. Within a relatively short history, the parish's development from a newly created pastoral unit into a community with its own church and broader local relationships is clearly documented.
