History & origins
Catholic life in the Gangnae and Gangoe area predates the formal establishment of Sagok Mission Station. The Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Osong Parish records that Catholic believers and small mission communities were already present in the broader region in the early twentieth century. After the Korean War, the number of Catholics in the Cheongju area increased, and the territory of the existing Cheongju parish was gradually divided, creating a need for a separate parish to serve Gangnae-myeon and Gangoe-myeon.
Against this background, Osong Parish was established on September 8, 1960, after being separated from Cheongju Parish. With the arrival of its first pastor, parish organizations and facilities were formed, and ministry to outlying communities was actively expanded. The encyclopedia records that in 1963 Sagok Mission Station in Sagok-ri, Gangnae-myeon, and Oksan Mission Station in Garak-ri, Oksan-myeon, were established. Sagok thus became one of the local pastoral bases created so that Catholics in the parish’s wider territory could remain regularly connected with parish life.
Although administrative boundaries and parish structures changed over time, the mission station bearing the name Sagok did not disappear. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current official mission-station list still includes Sagok at a location in the same Gangnae living area. Its history is therefore not the story of a large independent church but of the way a parish and a small rural Catholic community remained linked over decades. The earlier regional Catholic presence, the establishment of Osong Parish, and the creation of Sagok Mission Station form a continuous sequence leading to the present community.
The fact that Sagok remains listed as a mission station today also confirms that it is more than a name preserved in historical documents. The community established under Osong Parish continued even after changes in local administration and urban structure. Sagok therefore illustrates the long-term role of rural mission stations in supplementing parish ministry and sustaining Catholic life close to local residents.
