Saenggeuk Catholic Church

History & origins

Saenggeuk Parish was established by the Catholic Diocese of Cheongju on June 13, 2001. Church historical sources state that it was formed by bringing together Chapyeong Mission Station, then under Gamgok Parish, and Saenggeuk Mission Station, then under Geumwang Parish, and that it became the 55th parish of the diocese. The new parish gave Catholics who had previously belonged to two different mother parishes a single pastoral community centered on Saenggeuk-myeon.

Saint John Nam Jong-sam was chosen as patron. After the parish was erected, attention turned to building a church that could serve as the community's center. Contemporary reports describe parishioners contributing despite limited financial means, while the diocesan vocations supporters and Catholics from other parishes also provided assistance. The construction of the church was therefore sustained not only by the new parish but by wider diocesan solidarity.

After about eight months of construction, Bishop Jang Bong-hun presided over the dedication of the new church on November 20, 2003. The church was built as a single-story structure of roughly 130 pyeong on a site of about 1,800 pyeong. Later Catholic descriptions emphasize the restrained character of the rural church and its focus on the sanctuary and liturgical symbolism, showing that a prayerful atmosphere was an important concern in the design.

The history of Saenggeuk Catholic Church is therefore centered on a 2001 pastoral reorganization that joined the foundations of two existing mission communities and the dedication of a permanent church in 2003. Rather than eliminating the traditions of those mission stations, the new parish gathered them into a single structure, preserving local continuity while giving Catholics an independent parish and church of their own. It is a clear example of the development of rural pastoral organization within the Diocese of Cheongju.
