Saemmal Mission Station

History & origins

A report citing the results of a Chungcheongbuk-do survey of Catholic heritage records Saemmal Mission Station as having been established in 1955. The same survey records 1970 as the date associated with its present mission-station building. On this evidence, the Catholic community in Saemmal took shape as a mission station during the post-Korean War rebuilding period and later secured a dedicated building that gave local faith life a more stable center.

Catholic life in the broader Angseong area was then developing within the extensive pastoral territory of Gamgok, historically known as Janghowon Parish. A 1961 Catholic Times report records the blessing and completion of a newly built hall for an “Angseong-myeon mission station belonging to Janghowon Parish.” Although that article concerns the Angseong-area mission rather than the Saemmal building itself, it is contemporary evidence that a mission-station-based pastoral network was taking shape in Angseong during the 1950s and 1960s.

Angseong Parish was later established as a separate parish on June 24, 1995, reorganizing the pastoral structure of the area. The Catholic Church directory now explicitly names Angseong Parish as the mother parish of Saemmal, and the current diocesan parish information likewise treats Saemmal as a mission community within Angseong's pastoral jurisdiction.

The documented outline of Saemmal's history therefore consists of the 1955 establishment record, the 1970 building record, and its present relationship with Angseong Parish following the creation of that parish in 1995. This development also reflects the broader transformation of Catholic life in Angseong from mission-station-centered pastoral care to a structure in which an independent parish and several mission communities are linked together. Public sources do not provide enough detail to identify every early leader or building stage, but the main line of continuity is clear.
