Sacheondong Church

History & origins

The origins of Sacheon-dong Parish lie in the rapid urbanization of northern Cheongju in the late 1980s. The Catholic Encyclopedia explains that new apartment complexes caused a sharp rise in the Catholic population of Naedeok-dong Cathedral Parish, leading the Diocese of Cheongju to consider a division of the parish. As a result, Sacheon-dong Parish was established from the cathedral parish on May 19, 1991, with 581 households and 1,760 parishioners at the time of its foundation.

The new parish did not initially possess the church complex seen today. Its first pastor, Father Kim Dong-il, rented a basement in Yullyang-dong as a temporary chapel, and in August of the same year the community moved to Sacheon-dong and celebrated Mass in a tent. In 1992 the parish prepared a construction plan and received land from the diocese. A groundbreaking ceremony was held on March 6, 1994, and on October 16, 1995, a complex of about 700 pyeong, with one basement and two floors above ground, was completed and dedicated, including the church, education building, rectory, and convent.

The parish’s growth also led to the creation of another community. On August 5, 1993, only about two years after the parish was founded, Ochang quasi-parish was separated and received 294 households and 873 parishioners; it was raised to parish status the following year. A local community of the Benedictine Sisters of Busan was also established in 1994. These developments show how quickly the Catholic population and pastoral needs of northern Cheongju were expanding.

Sacheon-dong eventually settled into its role as an independent parish serving the northern city. The movement from a rented basement and a tent to a permanent church, followed by the separation of Ochang as a new pastoral unit, illustrates how demographic change directly reshaped diocesan structures. The present parish rests on this accumulated history of division, temporary worship, church construction, and the formation of neighboring communities.
