History & origins

The Catholic community in 옥산 took on a more established form as a mission station under the parish. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea entry on the parish records that in 1963 오송 established 옥산 공소 together with 사곡 공소 and began caring for these outlying communities. At that time, 옥산 was not an independent parish but a local community under 오송’s pastoral care.

The community continued as a mission station until it was elevated to parish status and separated from 오송 in June 1997. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current record gives June 30, 1997 as the establishment date of the parish. The elevation from mission station to parish meant that the local faithful formed their own parish community with an independent pastoral structure.

The history of ‘옥산 성당’ can thus be traced from the establishment of a mission station in the 1960s to the formation of an independent parish in the 1990s. It illustrates a pattern of rural pastoral development in which a mission station served as a local center of faith and, as the community matured, became a parish.
