About this place
‘오창 성당’ is the parish church of a Catholic parish in the Diocese of Cheongju and serves as the center of Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and fellowship for Catholics in the 오창 area. The Diocese of Cheongju gives the parish the patronal title of the Annunciation of the Lord and currently administers it as an independent parish.
Its most important identity is that of a parish church responsible for the ordinary life of faith of local Catholics. Unlike a shrine or a religious-institute chapel centered on a particular pilgrimage purpose or religious community, this church is a pastoral center where Catholics of the local area gather around the liturgy and the sacraments. Visitors should therefore understand ‘오창 성당’ primarily as the center of a living local parish community.
History & origins
오창 began as an independent pastoral unit in connection with the growth of 사천동본당. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea entry on 사천동본당, increasing numbers of faithful led 사천동 to separate 오창 as a quasi-parish on August 5, 1993, transferring the records of 294 households and 873 Catholics. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current listing gives August 5, 1993 as 오창’s establishment date, corresponding to this creation of the quasi-parish.
The the 오창 quasi-parish was elevated to a full parish the following year, on June 29, 1994. It is therefore important to distinguish the two stages: the creation of the quasi-parish in 1993 and its elevation to full parish status in 1994.
Together, these stages illustrate the expansion of the Diocese of Cheongju’s parish network as pastoral territories were divided to respond to growth in northern Cheongju. the parish has since continued its history as an independent parish community centered on the 오창 area.
