Neungsan Mission Station is a Catholic mission station in Samseong-myeon, Eumseong County, officially listed by the Diocese of Cheongju. It is not an independent parish with a resident parish structure, but a smaller local Catholic community where the faithful can remain connected to communal prayer and liturgical life close to home. The significance of a mission station lies less in its size than in the continuity of its community. Neungsan likewise serves as a local point where Catholics in northern Eumseong remain connected with parish life, and its continued listing by the Diocese of Cheongju shows that it remains a living part of the Catholic presence in the area.
History & origins
The history of Neungsan Mission Station can be traced within the growth of the Catholic community in the Samseong area. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia places the arrival of the faith in Samseong-myeon around 1904 and describes the local communities as later developing under Geumwang Parish. In 1976, while the area was still under Geumwang Parish, a chapel was built for Neungsan Mission Station.
When Samseong was established as a quasi-parish in 1988 and then raised to a full parish in 1991, Neungsan was recorded as one of the mission stations transferred to the new Samseong Parish, together with Daeso and Gwanghyewon. Daeso and Gwanghyewon later became separate parishes, while Neungsan remained a mission station and continued the life of its local Catholic community.
The Diocese of Cheongju still lists Neungsan among its official mission stations. Its history therefore illustrates how a small Catholic community in northern Eumseong endured through parish reorganizations and changes in the surrounding region.
