The Chungju community of the Marist Brothers is listed in the Korean Catholic Directory as a community of consecrated life belonging to the Diocese of Cheongju. Its official English name is given as “Marist Brothers: F.M.S.,” and the community is located in Sancheok-myeon, Chungju. It is not a parish centered on priestly ministry, but a community of religious brothers living common life and carrying out their apostolate.
Following the spirit of Saint Marcellin Champagnat, the Marist Brothers are dedicated especially to the education and evangelization of children and young people, with particular concern for those most in need. The Chungju community is one of the places where this Marist mission is lived in Korea, and the international Marist website also confirms the existence of a Chungju community.
History & origins
The roots of the Marist Brothers go back to January 2, 1817, when Saint Marcellin Champagnat founded the “Little Brothers of Mary” at La Valla in France. In 1863 the Holy See approved the institute as an autonomous religious institute of pontifical right and gave it the title Marist Brothers of the Schools (F.M.S.).
The exact year in which the Chungju community was established is not stated in the public official sources reviewed here. However, the Marist international website explicitly mentioned a Chungju community when describing the Korean communities in 2014, while the Korean Catholic Directory currently lists the Chungju branch under the Diocese of Cheongju.
Within the limits of the available evidence, the Chungju branch can therefore be confirmed as a Marist community that was already in existence by 2014 and continues today. The precise foundation date and the details of its earliest activities should be added only when further internal historical records of the institute become available.
