About this place

The Cheongju branch of the Servants of Mary is listed in the Korean Catholic Directory as a women’s community of consecrated life belonging to the Diocese of Cheongju. It is currently located at the same site as Naesu Parish, and the congregation’s English name is given as “Servants of Mary: O.S.M.” It is not the parish itself, but a religious community in which sisters live common life and carry out apostolic service within the local Church.

The congregation follows Christ in the spirit of Mary’s service and obedience and has taken part in parish apostolate, education, and works of service in Korea. The Cheongju branch is significant as a place where this religious mission continues within a local parish community.

History & origins

The Servants of Mary were founded by Father Ferdinando Maria Baccilieri on June 23, 1862, in Galeazza, Italy. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia and the Korean Catholic Directory record that the congregation prepared to enter Korea at the invitation of Bishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk, then Bishop of Cheongju, and began its apostolic work in Cheongju in September 1985.

The first community established a convent in Bongmyeong-dong, Cheongju. A novitiate was opened in 1987, and in 1988 the central house and novitiate moved to Yullyang-dong. As the Korean community grew, it was raised to the status of a branch in 1992. The encyclopedia records that by the 1990s the sisters were already serving in parish apostolates including Naesu Parish.

The Korean Catholic Directory now lists a separate “Servants of Mary, Cheongju Branch” at the same location as Naesu Parish. The exact opening date of this particular branch is not given in the public sources, but the wider record clearly shows a long relationship between the congregation’s Korean mission, the Diocese of Cheongju, and parish apostolate.
