About this place
Kkottongnae Eumseong Quasi-Parish Church is the church of the quasi-parish community listed by the Diocese of Cheongju as “Kkottongnae (Quasi-) Parish.” Its most important characteristic is that it has the nature of a local parish community while being established as a quasi-parish rather than a full parish because of particular circumstances. A Catholic Times account from the time of its establishment likewise explains a quasi-parish as a defined community of the faithful entrusted to its own priest.
Within Eumseong Kkottongnae, the quasi-parish provides continuity for the liturgical and pastoral life of Catholics, religious, and others connected with the community and its facilities. The existence of a distinct quasi-parish within Kkottongnae, which is widely known for social welfare and religious life, shows that the place is not merely a collection of welfare institutions but also an ecclesial setting where Mass, the sacraments, and community pastoral care continue.
History & origins
As the welfare works and religious communities of Eumseong Kkottongnae grew, so did the need for a distinct pastoral structure for the Catholic community living within them. On September 18, 1997, Bishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk of Cheongju established Eumseong Kkottongnae as a quasi-parish. Contemporary reporting records that Father Oh Woong-jin was appointed its priest and that the Sacred Heart of Jesus was its patron.
At the time, Catholic Times also explained the canonical character of a quasi-parish: a defined community of the faithful within a particular Church that, because of special circumstances, has not yet been established as a parish but is entrusted to its own pastor. The establishment of the Kkottongnae quasi-parish was therefore more than the provision of another church building; it was an institutional arrangement for the diocesan pastoral care of an already existing community of faith within Kkottongnae.
The Diocese of Cheongju’s current parish record gives the same establishment date and continues to use the designation “Kkottongnae (Quasi-) Parish.” This confirms the continuity of the quasi-parish structure established in 1997.
