About this place

Junghung Catholic Church is a parish of the Sangdang District in the Diocese of Cheongju, serving as the local pastoral community in which Catholics in the southeastern part of Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, continue their liturgical and sacramental life. The official diocesan listing and the Catholic Directory in Korea identify Junghung as an independent parish and name the Korean martyr St. Joseph Chang Chu-gi as its patron.

The parish church is the center of the community for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and gatherings of the faithful. Together with the other parishes of the Sangdang District, Junghung Parish connects Catholics in southeastern Cheongju with the pastoral life of the diocese and helps them sustain their faith within their everyday living area. Having a Korean martyr as patron also gives the parish a distinctive way to remember the Korean Church's tradition of martyrdom and witness and to carry it into ordinary Christian life.

History & origins

Junghung Parish was established on January 20, 2005. The official parish listing of the Diocese of Cheongju and the Catholic Directory in Korea record the same date and also agree that St. Joseph Chang Chu-gi is its patron. From that point, Junghung was organized as a separate parish community and gained a pastoral base for Catholics in the southeastern part of Sangdang-gu, Cheongju.

The publicly available official sources do not provide enough detail to establish whether there was an earlier mission-station stage, the precise process by which the parish was separated from a mother parish, or the chronology of the first church building. What can be verified is that, since its establishment in 2005, Junghung Parish has continued as a parish of the Sangdang District of the Diocese of Cheongju, and the patronal devotion to St. Joseph Chang Chu-gi chosen at its foundation remains part of its parish identity.
