Daewol Monastery on Myeongam-gil in Baekgok-myeon, Jincheon-gun, is a contemplative monastic community of the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs. The Korean Catholic Directory lists it separately within the Diocese of Cheongju as the “Daewol Monastery” of the congregation, and the congregation’s official website likewise presents Daewol Monastery as a distinct community and apostolic category. Its most important identity is that of a monastery centered on contemplative religious life, rather than an ordinary parish convent.
The Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs takes as its distinctive spirituality a life of love and self-offering in the spirit of the Korean martyrs. Within that broader spirituality, Daewol Monastery gives particular weight to prayer and contemplation. It is therefore best understood not as simply another parish church or retreat facility, but as a contemplative monastery where religious sisters live the spirituality of their congregation through common life and prayer.
History & origins
The history of Daewol Monastery begins within the broader development of the Sisters of the Blessed Korean Martyrs. The congregation was founded in Kaesong on April 21, 1946, by Fr. Leo Bang Yu-ryong together with Teresa Yoon Byeong-hyeon and Marie Teresa Hong Eun-soon, with the continuation of the spirit of the Korean martyrs at the heart of its religious vocation. In 1950, shortly before the Korean War, the community moved its base to Cheongpa-dong in Seoul and rebuilt the foundations of its religious life there.
A Catholic Times article marking the congregation’s 70th anniversary records that the contemplative community known as “Daewol Monastery” was established in 1982. The National Library of Korea also catalogs a volume titled Daewol Monastery: 30th Anniversary Photo Book 1982–2012, showing that the congregation’s own commemorative record likewise treats 1982 as the monastery’s foundation year. Together, these sources consistently identify the point at which Daewol was established as a contemplative community within the congregation.
Daewol Monastery has continued as a religious community in Baekgok-myeon and is still listed today as a separate monastery in both the Korean Catholic Directory and the congregation’s official website. Its history can therefore be understood in relation to, but distinctly from, the general history of the congregation, with the establishment of the contemplative community in 1982 as its central milestone. It represents an enduring effort to live the spirituality of the Korean martyrs not only through active apostolates but also through a life of prayer and contemplation.
