About this place
The Catholic Youth Center is a pastoral hub operated by the Youth Ministry Office of the Diocese of Cheongju. Through this center, the office carries out the formation of catechists, support for parish Sunday schools, youth apostolate programs, young-adult spirituality and Bible programs, and university ministry. Its center operations also include ministry to young people outside the Church and cooperation with educational institutions.
The center contains a chapel, classrooms, and spaces for clubs and gatherings, allowing faith formation, liturgy, fellowship, counseling, and community activities to be connected in one place. For this reason, it is more than an educational building: it is a pastoral space that helps adolescents and young adults of the diocese learn the faith, meet one another, and grow within the Church community. The site also carries historical meaning because a long-standing center of Catholic life in Cheongju has been given a new role dedicated to youth ministry.
History & origins
The site of the Catholic Youth Center had already been an important center of Catholic life in Cheongju before the present facility was built. The Catholic Times describes it as the site of Cheongju's first parish and the former diocesan curia. A place that had successively housed a parish community and the administrative center of the diocese was later transformed into a new space for youth ministry.
Through the synod marking the 50th anniversary of the Diocese of Cheongju, the diocese identified the need for a dedicated base and space for youth ministry and proceeded with the construction of the Catholic Youth Center. The new three-story building included a chapel, auditorium, classrooms, club rooms, counseling rooms, and a resource room for catechists. On November 26, 2011, it was blessed in a ceremony presided over by Bishop Gabriel Jang Bong-hun.
The project did more than preserve a former diocesan center; it gave the historic site a new life as a place for the faith formation and community life of the next generation. Where the parish and the diocesan curia had once served as centers of local evangelization, the youth center continued the ecclesial function of the same site in a new form by providing a pastoral base for adolescents and young adults.
