Gamgok Cathedral

History & origins

The roots of Gamgok Parish lie in the late nineteenth-century relocation of the pastoral center of Bu-eong-gol Parish in Yeoju toward the Janghowon area. In 1896, Fr. Camillus Bouillon of the Paris Foreign Missions Society secured a house and land on Maesan Hill and established a new parish base there. The community later grew into an important mother parish for the expansion of Catholicism in Chungcheongbuk-do. The Diocese of Cheongju's own historical account likewise presents the establishment of a parish at Gamgok in 1896 as an important starting point in the development of the local Church.

The present church is a Gothic-style building completed in 1930. A statue of Our Lady of the Rosary made in Lourdes was installed at the center of the sanctuary, and a granite rectory was completed in 1934. On January 5, 1996, the church building was designated a Tangible Cultural Heritage of Chungcheongbuk-do, receiving formal recognition both as the center of a long-established Catholic community and as a work of modern Catholic architecture.

Over time, the pastoral territory of Gamgok Parish was divided to form additional parishes. Church records note that Gomari, Cheongju, Chungju, Mugeuk, and later Angseong and Saenggeuk were among the parishes separated from Gamgok. This process shows that Gamgok was not merely a local parish, but a mother parish that influenced the formation of Catholic communities across several parts of Chungcheongbuk-do. Its history thus forms an important strand of the region's Catholic growth through the relocation of a missionary center, the construction of a permanent church, and the successive creation of new parishes.
