Gagyeong-dong Church

History & origins

The history of Gagyeong-dong Parish can be understood within the urban development of western Cheongju and the successive division of parish territories. When Bokdae-dong Parish was separated from Sachang-dong Parish in 1988, its territory included Gagyeong-dong and Gaesin-dong. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia also records that in the mid-1990s Bokdae-dong Parish still had jurisdiction over Gagyeong-dong and parts of Gaesin-dong, showing that Catholics in this area were for a time served through Bokdae-dong Parish.

The Diocese of Cheongju records January 20, 2005 as the establishment date of Gagyeong-dong Parish. From that point, Gagyeong-dong became an independent parish within the diocesan structure, representing another stage in the subdivision of the broad pastoral territories of western Cheongju as the local population and Catholic community grew.

The establishment of Gagyeong-dong Parish belongs to the later phase of a broader process in which pastoral territories in western Cheongju were divided step by step as residential development expanded around Bokdae-dong and Gagyeong-dong after the 1980s. The sequence from the separation of Bokdae-dong from Sachang-dong to the later establishment of Gagyeong-dong as an independent parish shows how diocesan pastoral units were adjusted toward communities closer to where people lived as the city grew. The historical significance of Gagyeong-dong Catholic Church therefore lies less in the age of its building than in the formation and settlement of a modern urban parish.
