Duchon Parish belongs to the Jungbu District of the Diocese of Cheongju and is located in Maengdong-myeon, Eumseong County. The diocese identifies Our Lady of Lourdes as its patron and lists Duchon as an established parish. It is the local parish in which Catholics of the Maengdong area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Duchon is one of the more recently established parishes in the Diocese of Cheongju, providing an independent pastoral community where local Catholics can gather within their own area. Its present significance lies in the parish community’s role as a center of Catholic life for the locality.
History & origins
According to the official parish record of the Diocese of Cheongju, Duchon Parish was established on August 12, 2016. When the diocese reported on a Confirmation celebration at Duchon in 2024, it again stated the same establishment date, so the beginning of the parish is confirmed by two diocesan sources.
Since its establishment, Duchon has developed as a parish of the Jungbu District. The diocesan record of the bishop celebrating Confirmation there in 2024 shows the relatively new parish functioning and growing within the ordinary sacramental and pastoral structure of the local Church.
The publicly available diocesan sources do not yet provide enough detail about the community before 2016, the process by which it may have been separated from a mother parish, or the detailed history of the church building. For that reason, the verified establishment of the parish in 2016 is the appropriate starting point for its early history.
