About this place
Daeso Parish is a parish of the Eumseong District in the Diocese of Cheongju, located in Daeso-myeon, Eumseong County. The diocesan record names Saint Joseph as its patron and includes Daeso among the diocese’s established parishes. It is the local Catholic parish community in which the faithful of the Daeso area gather for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
Daeso grew into an independent parish from a mission-station community that existed before the parish was established. Its present significance lies less in the church building itself than in its role as the center where Catholics from Daeso-myeon and the surrounding area come together to live their faith as one community.
History & origins
The Daeso Catholic community existed as a mission station before it became a parish. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s entry on Samseong Parish, when Samseong was raised to full parish status in 1991, Daeso Mission Station was transferred from Geumwang Parish to the new Samseong Parish together with Gwanghyewon and Neungsan. This confirms that the Daeso community had already been living its faith as a mission station before becoming an independent parish.
As pastoral boundaries were reorganized during the 1990s, Daeso was separated as an independent parish in 1997. The current diocesan parish record also gives 1997 as the year of establishment. However, the current diocesan record and the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia differ on the month and day, so this account does not assert an exact establishment date.
Daeso Parish subsequently became part of the Eumseong District of the Diocese of Cheongju. Its transition from mission station to parish shows how the Catholic community of northern Eumseong developed into an independent pastoral unit as the region changed.
