About this place

Cheongan Mission Station is a Catholic mission community of the Diocese of Cheongju in Cheongan-myeon, Goesan County, and today continues its life of faith in connection with Jeungpyeong Parish. The official Diocese of Cheongju mission-station list records Cheongan at its present location, while the current Jeungpyeong Parish liturgical information also places Cheongan Mission Station within the parish schedule, confirming their pastoral relationship.

For Catholics in Cheongan-myeon, the mission station is a local place where they can pray together and continue Mass and sacramental life through the pastoral care of the parish priest. Unlike an independent parish with a resident priest, a mission station operates in close connection with its mother parish; Cheongan therefore serves as a link between Jeungpyeong Parish and the local Catholic community. The very fact that a small community maintains a stable place of faith within the area illustrates the importance of mission stations in rural pastoral ministry.

History & origins

The exact year in which Cheongan Mission Station was first opened and the details of its earliest formation are not established in the reliable public sources consulted. The Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, however, records in its history of Jeungpyeong Parish that in March 1994 the then pastor, Father Timothy Choi Sang-hun, celebrated the blessing of Cheongan Mission Station. This is an important verified milestone in which the place and community clearly appear in the surviving historical record.

Cheongan Mission Station has continued in relation to Jeungpyeong Parish. Today the official Diocese of Cheongju mission-station list records its present location in Cheongan-myeon, Goesan County, and the diocesan information for Jeungpyeong Parish includes the liturgical life of Cheongan Mission Station within the parish schedule. Although the precise year of origin cannot be confirmed, the 1994 blessing and the present pastoral connection together verify the continuing presence of a small Catholic community in Cheongan.
