Bunpyeong-dong Catholic Church

History & origins

Bunpyeong-dong Parish was established as the Diocese of Cheongju continued to divide and create parishes in response to urban growth and the expansion of the Catholic population. Diocesan historical material records that, even in the early 2000s, the diocese was creating new parishes while promoting the evangelization of families and local communities, and it identifies Bunpyeong-dong as one of the parishes established in 2001. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current parish directory gives the precise establishment date as May 19, 2001.

After its establishment, the community gradually took shape as an independent parish and prepared permanent spaces for worship and pastoral life. On October 27, 2012, Bishop Gabriel Chang Bong-hun presided at the dedication of the new church. Contemporary reporting describes a site of 4,538.84 square meters and a building area of 1,933.88 square meters, with one basement level and three floors above ground. The complex linked the church, education building, auditorium, office, rectory, convent, and a small café, providing in one place the spaces needed for liturgy, formation, fellowship, and parish administration.

The design also expressed the parish’s spiritual identity. The interior theme was “Call and Response,” the exterior theme was “Communication and Participation,” and Catholic sacred artists contributed statues and artworks intended to evoke the spirituality of Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon, the parish patron and martyr priest. The dedication of this church marked a transition from a newly founded parish to a community with a stable physical base capable of supporting worship, education, and fellowship together.

Within the broader history of the diocese, the creation of Bunpyeong-dong Parish was one example of the subdivision of pastoral territories in response to the expanding urban life of Cheongju. The later dedication of a permanent church brought liturgical and educational facilities together and allowed the community that had begun as a new parish to move toward long-term local ministry. The sequence from parish establishment to the construction of a permanent complex illustrates a characteristic path by which a new urban Catholic community became rooted in the Diocese of Cheongju.
