Bugang Catholic Church

History & origins

Catholic history in the Bugang area began in mission communities that predated the present parish. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia identifies the establishment of a mission station at Biryong in 1907 by Fr. Curier of Gongju Parish as an important beginning for Catholic life in the region. Biryong later passed under the jurisdictions of Okcheon, Daejeon, and Cheongju parishes, while a Catholic community also developed around Yongpo in the Bugang area itself.

As Catholic life in Chungcheongbuk-do expanded, Bugang Parish was separated from Cheongju Parish in April 1957, with Maryknoll missionary Fr. Daniel Schneider appointed as its first pastor. He purchased a Korean traditional house in Bugang and used it as a temporary church. Built in 1934, this hanok became the actual setting of the parish’s early liturgical life and remains an important historical part of the site.

As the number of Catholics increased, a larger church became necessary. Land for the present church was acquired in 1961 and construction began that year; the new church and rectory were completed and blessed in June 1962. The building combines Western church elements, including thick masonry walls and rounded arches, with a tiled roof and a bell-tower arrangement reminiscent of East Asian forms. The old hanok was later used for purposes such as a kindergarten, convent, and parish meeting space, remaining beside the newer church.

After the parish was established, Maryknoll priests were active not only in evangelization but also in relief and local community support. The parish cared for numerous mission stations, including Biryong, Cheoksan, Sangsam, Simok, Munui, and Mundong, creating a wide rural pastoral network. Bugang’s history is therefore the story of a mission community becoming an independent parish while preserving a distinctive Catholic architectural heritage in which traditional Korean and modern church buildings stand side by side. The survival of both the hanok and the present church makes this transition—from mission station to parish, and from temporary worship space to an independent church—visibly legible even today.
