Bongbang-dong Cathedral

History & origins

For many years, the Bongbang-dong area was included within the broad pastoral territory of Gyohyeon-dong Parish in Chungju. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia’s history of Gyohyeon-dong lists Bongbang-dong among the areas under its care. As Chungju’s urban population and Catholic distribution changed, the need grew to subdivide the territory so that pastoral care could be offered closer to where people lived.

In the mid-1990s, the Diocese of Cheongju pursued a policy of establishing smaller parishes even in areas with modest Catholic populations, strengthening community-based pastoral care. A 1996 Catholic Times report noted the creation of new parishes in Bongbang-dong, Munui, and Gwanghyewon, and reported that the new Bongbang-dong community began with roughly nine hundred Catholics. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current records give 29 June 1996 as the parish’s establishment date.

The creation of the parish was more than an administrative division. It represented a relocation of pastoral resources so that Catholics could participate in Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life closer to home. Although Bongbang-dong was an urban parish, its creation was consistent with the diocese’s broader strategy of building smaller, more accessible parish communities.

Bongbang-dong Parish later became an established parish within the Jungwon district of Chungju. Available public sources concentrate mainly on its foundation rather than later building history, so subsequent architectural changes cannot be described in detail. Even so, the 1996 separation clearly shows the parish’s historical character as a community born at the meeting point of urban growth and locally focused pastoral planning. The creation of the parish was not intended simply as an administrative division of a large territory. By adjusting the pastoral jurisdiction of Gyohyeon-dong Parish, it created a new center where Catholics in downtown Chungju could participate consistently in the sacraments and community life closer to where they lived.
