About this place
Boeun Catholic Church is the parish church of a Diocese of Cheongju parish in Boeun-eup, Chungcheongbuk-do, with Mary, Queen of the Apostles, as its patron. The parish serves Catholics across a broad rural area centered on Boeun-eup and has particular significance as the pastoral center linking mission-station communities scattered throughout the Boeun region. The Diocese of Cheongju’s current parish directory confirms Boeun as an established parish in the southern part of the diocese, continuing to gather local Catholics for liturgy, faith formation, fellowship, and service.
The parish is best understood not simply as a church building but as the center that connects a long history of Catholic villages and mission stations across Boeun. Mission communities such as Baekseok, Hoein, and Songni have historically been linked to Boeun Parish, and the parish has served as a point of unity for Catholics living across a wide rural territory. Today Boeun Catholic Church continues that rural missionary tradition by bringing together the ordinary faith life of the local Catholic community. This structure linking the parish with its mission stations provides an important foundation for sustaining and connecting Catholic communities across the broad Boeun area.
History & origins
Catholic life in the Boeun area reaches much further back than the establishment of the parish itself. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that several Christian villages existed in the region before the Byeongin Persecution, but were dispersed during persecution. Around 1897–1898, Fr. Bouillon of Janghowon Parish began visiting Catholic families living in pottery villages such as Seonnyeosil, Gaseup, and Hwangtomal, bringing the communities back into clearer view. By the early twentieth century, mission stations including Seonnyeosil, Hagaseup, Hwangtomal, Achisil, and Jatgogae appeared in church statistics, and the area subsequently passed through the pastoral jurisdictions of Okcheon, Biryong, Daejeon, and Cheongju.
A mission station was established in Boeun-eup in 1952. As the Catholic population grew and the broad territory became increasingly difficult for Okcheon Parish to serve alone, Boeun Parish was separated from Okcheon and established in October 1955. Its first pastor, Fr. Craig, secured land the following year and built a church and rectory. Mission stations such as Sejung, Sangpan, Baekseok, and Hoein were subsequently established, expanding the network of Catholic communities centered on the new parish.
As the community grew, construction of a new church began in 1965, and a church of roughly 248 pyeong was completed in 1966. A community of religious sisters was established the following year to assist parish ministry, while Gwanggi Mission Station in 1968 and Songni Mission Station in 1975 further extended pastoral care across the rural area. Although population changes weakened parish numbers for a time in the 1970s, groups such as the altar society, choir, youth association, and parish pastoral council helped rebuild the community’s internal structure.
From the 1980s onward, Boeun Parish continued strengthening the bonds between parishioners and mission-station Catholics through formation programs, pilgrimages, devotional movements, and catechesis. The history of Boeun Catholic Church is therefore not simply the history of one building, but the story of connecting Christian villages and mission stations that re-emerged after persecution and gradually formed a stable local church.
