Boeun Catholic Church

History & origins

Catholic life in the Boeun area reaches much further back than the establishment of the parish itself. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia records that several Christian villages existed in the region before the Byeongin Persecution, but were dispersed during persecution. Around 1897–1898, Fr. Bouillon of Janghowon Parish began visiting Catholic families living in pottery villages such as Seonnyeosil, Gaseup, and Hwangtomal, bringing the communities back into clearer view. By the early twentieth century, mission stations including Seonnyeosil, Hagaseup, Hwangtomal, Achisil, and Jatgogae appeared in church statistics, and the area subsequently passed through the pastoral jurisdictions of Okcheon, Biryong, Daejeon, and Cheongju.

A mission station was established in Boeun-eup in 1952. As the Catholic population grew and the broad territory became increasingly difficult for Okcheon Parish to serve alone, Boeun Parish was separated from Okcheon and established in October 1955. Its first pastor, Fr. Craig, secured land the following year and built a church and rectory. Mission stations such as Sejung, Sangpan, Baekseok, and Hoein were subsequently established, expanding the network of Catholic communities centered on the new parish.

As the community grew, construction of a new church began in 1965, and a church of roughly 248 pyeong was completed in 1966. A community of religious sisters was established the following year to assist parish ministry, while Gwanggi Mission Station in 1968 and Songni Mission Station in 1975 further extended pastoral care across the rural area. Although population changes weakened parish numbers for a time in the 1970s, groups such as the altar society, choir, youth association, and parish pastoral council helped rebuild the community’s internal structure.

From the 1980s onward, Boeun Parish continued strengthening the bonds between parishioners and mission-station Catholics through formation programs, pilgrimages, devotional movements, and catechesis. The history of Boeun Catholic Church is therefore not simply the history of one building, but the story of connecting Christian villages and mission stations that re-emerged after persecution and gradually formed a stable local church.
