About this place

Chang 5-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Archdiocese of Seoul’s 6th Dobong–Gangbuk District, located at 15-15 Nohae-ro 63ga-gil, Dobong-gu, Seoul. The Korean Catholic Directory records it as a parish established in 1991 and lists its patronal identity as the Immaculate Heart of Mary / a Marian pilgrimage church.

The community originally began under the name “Chang 4-dong Parish” and was renamed “Chang 5-dong Parish” in 2009. Thus today’s Chang 5-dong Parish is the community whose history goes back to 1991 and must be distinguished from the present Chang 4-dong Parish, which was established separately in 2012.

History & origins

The predecessor of Chang 5-dong Parish began on February 25, 1991, as a mission station of Chang-dong Parish. The Archdiocese of Seoul announced that a new “Chang 4-dong Parish” would be erected from Chang-dong effective August 23 of that year, while the parish’s own chronology records September 4 as the day it was separated as Chang 4-dong Parish. The two records therefore use slightly different reference dates for the parish’s establishment and should be read together.

The community purchased the site of the present church in 1996, began construction in 1999, and moved into the new church in September 2000. In 2009, an archdiocesan revision of parish names to reflect administrative changes renamed it “Chang 5-dong Parish.” In February 2012, the present, separate Chang 4-dong Parish was in turn created from this parish.
