Byeolyang-dong Cathedral

History & origins

Byeoryang-dong Parish was established on January 30, 1998, under the provisional name “Gwacheon Second Catholic Church.” According to the official parish history, a substantial number of households and Catholics belonged to the new parish from the outset, reflecting the need to create an independent pastoral unit in response to the growth of the Gwacheon area. On May 31 of the same year, the name “Byeoryang-dong Catholic Church” was formally confirmed, establishing the parish name that continues today.

The new community quickly prepared a place for liturgy. Work on a church space proceeded during the summer of 1998, the move was completed, and the first Mass there was celebrated on August 16. On September 6, Bishop Paul Choi Deok-ki presided over the blessing of the church. The rapid sequence from parish establishment to securing a church space formed the first stage in giving the new Catholic community of central Gwacheon a stable pastoral base.

The spatial challenge of an urban parish, however, was not solved by a single move. The parish chronicle states that work began again in November 2000 to prepare a church on the sixth floor of the Sae Seoul Shopping Center. The move was completed on February 10, 2001, and the first Mass was celebrated there. The fact that the present representative address is within a commercial facility is therefore the result of the parish's adaptation to the limited space of the city.

The community continued to prepare for future needs. The official history records the blessing of a second church site in 2017, followed in 2018 by an outdoor Mass and blessings of a cross, a statue of the Virgin Mary, and the Stations of the Cross. The history of Byeoryang-dong Parish can thus be understood as a process of gradually securing appropriate liturgical spaces within the urban environment of Gwacheon while maintaining continuity as a single parish community across different locations.
