Yulha Catholic Church

History & origins

Yulha Parish was created as the Catholic community in the Jangyu area of Gimhae expanded and was separated from Jangyu-Daecheong Parish. Both the official Catholic Directory in Korea and the Catholic Times give January 12, 2010, as the date of the parish's establishment. This provided an independent parish community and a closer pastoral base for Catholics living in the newly developing Yulha residential area.

Construction of a church was pursued almost immediately. According to the Catholic Times, the parish held a groundbreaking ceremony on January 23 and, after review by the diocesan building committee, began full-scale construction on November 30, 2010. Parishioners participated directly in preparing the new church by visiting other parishes for fundraising and raising building funds through local product sales and bazaars.

The completed church was dedicated on April 8, 2012, by Bishop Paul Hwang Cheol-soo. With offices, a hall, kitchen, main worship space, choir area, and meeting rooms, the building provided the newly established parish with facilities not only for liturgy but also for formation and community activity. Yulha's early history thus shows how a new parish was created in a developing residential area and, through active community participation, acquired an independent church and pastoral base within a relatively short period. At the time of dedication, the new church had a total floor area of about 1,060 square meters over three stories. The first floor contained offices, a hall, and kitchen; the second held the main church; and the third provided space for the choir, young children, and meetings. This arrangement shows that the new parish prepared not only a sanctuary for Mass but a building able to support administration, formation, meetings, and activities for different age groups. Together with the record of parishioners directly participating in fundraising, the building project itself can be seen as an important part of forming the early parish community.
