Yongho Church

History & origins

The substantial formation of a Catholic community in Yongho began amid urban redevelopment and population movement. According to the Korean Catholic Encyclopedia, residents from parts of Daesin-dong, Yeongju-dong, and Jwacheon-dong were relocated to Yongho-dong in 1972 as shanty settlements were cleared in Busan, and Catholics were among those who settled there. As the number of faithful grew and the distance from the parish church became a practical concern, a separate local center was needed, and the Yongho mission station was established in October 1974 in a rented kindergarten building.

The mission-station community formed a church-building preparatory committee at the end of 1976 and secured a site the following year. Construction began in August 1978 with offerings from the faithful and support from the Missionary Society of St. Columban. On December 3 of that year, Yongho Parish was formally established after being separated from Daeyeon Parish. A one-story church was completed and dedicated on December 8, giving the former mission-station community the physical and pastoral foundation of an independent parish.

Facilities continued to expand as the parish grew. A community of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity was established in 1979 and a convent was built, while the church itself was enlarged in the early 1980s to provide more liturgical space. Buildings serving as a rectory, convent, and education center were later added, broadening the parish's capacity for formation and pastoral work. This sequence shows how the Catholic community of Yongho developed with the surrounding city, moving from a mission station to an independent parish and then to a community with a fuller range of pastoral facilities. The Korean Catholic Encyclopedia gives this expansion in greater detail: an enlargement committee was formed in August 1980, construction began in October 1981, and a three-story church was completed in May 1982. It also records that work on facilities for the rectory, convent, and education center began in 1996 and was completed in the summer of 1998, showing how the growing parish gradually acquired space not only for worship but also for formation and community life.
