Yeompo Catholic Church

History & origins

The background to the establishment of Yeompo Parish was the rapid industrialization of northern Ulsan. From the late 1960s, a major automobile plant and related industrial facilities were established in Yangjeong-dong, bringing a large influx of people from other regions. The number of Catholics also increased, but the area was then served by the much larger Ulsan Parish, while the existing Yangjeong mission station was removed in the mid-1970s. The need for a new pastoral center therefore became increasingly urgent.

Ulsan Parish secured land for a new church in the Yeompo area, and a groundbreaking ceremony was held in November 1980. While construction was in progress, Yeompo Parish was formally established on August 25, 1981 by separation from Ulsan Parish, with Father Choi Deuk-su Andrew appointed as the first pastor. The Catholic Church directory in Korea records the same establishment date and lists Our Lady of Sorrows as the patron.

The new church was dedicated on September 15, 1981, shortly after the parish was established. The early community organized a pastoral council and put in place the structures necessary for parish life. As industry and residential areas in northern Ulsan continued to change, Yeompo Parish remained an independent community for liturgy and pastoral ministry.

This history shows that Yeompo Church was not merely a religious building that appeared alongside industrial development. It was a pastoral center created in response to a new residential area and a Catholic population formed by industrialization. The concentration of the church’s construction, parish establishment, and dedication in 1980–1981 also reflects the speed of change in the area at that time. Regional change continued after Yeompo was separated, and additional parishes were later established in northern Ulsan as the pastoral network became more detailed. As one of the earlier parishes created in a new population center produced by industrialization, Yeompo represents an early stage in the way Catholic communities in northern Ulsan were reorganized in response to rapid local change.
