Yangsan Cathedral

History & origins

Catholic faith in the Yangsan area predates the establishment of the present parish by many decades and was sustained through mission stations. Local accounts drawing on the parish’s fiftieth-anniversary history and the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea indicate that Catholic mission communities existed in the Yangsan area from the late nineteenth century. In the 1930s, land was even prepared with the establishment of a parish in mind, but the plan could not be realized under the conditions of the Japanese colonial period. After liberation, the mission community was reorganized and preparations for parish status resumed.

In 1947 a building was secured in Yangsan-eup to strengthen the mission community, and during the 1950s preparations for an independent parish continued with support from the parish then responsible for the area. From 1963, a religious congregation assisted in the pastoral care of the mission, helping the community become more active and grow in number. Finally, on December 27, 1967, the Yangsan mission station was elevated to a parish. During the tenure of the first pastor, Father Park Yu-sik, construction of a new church began in 1968 and was completed that same year. In 1969, the Mulgeum area was separated as its own parish, widening the pastoral network in Yangsan.

After decades of use, the church building eventually required major renewal in response to changes in the area and the community. In the mid-2000s the existing church underwent extensive reconstruction and improvement, culminating in the dedication of the renewed church in 2006. The history of Yangsan Parish thus follows the growth of Catholic life in the region through a longstanding mission-station tradition, elevation to parish status, the creation of neighboring parishes, and the rebuilding of its church.

Once the parish was established, neighboring communities also moved toward independence. The separation of Mulgeum marked an important transition from a period in which Yangsan Parish carried responsibility for a broad region to a structure in which several parishes shared pastoral care of the wider Yangsan area. As the city later expanded, this pattern of subdivision became part of a broader diocesan pastoral network.
