Yangjeong Church

History & origins

The Catholic community in Yangjeong passed through a mission-station period before it became a formal parish. The fiftieth-anniversary history published by Yangjeong Parish treats this earlier Yangjeong mission community as a distinct prehistory, showing that a local community of believers had formed before the parish itself developed. Records of the Diocese of Busan state that Yangjeong Parish was established in 1957, during the early years of the diocese. Busan was then undergoing rapid postwar population growth and urban expansion, while the diocese was establishing new pastoral centers in response.

After its establishment, Yangjeong Parish played an important role as a mother community in the subdivision of parishes in central Busan. In 1960, Seomyeon Parish was established from areas previously belonging to Busanjin and Yangjeong Parishes. In 1973, Yeonsan Parish was separated from Yangjeong, and in the same year Geoje-dong Parish was created from areas of Yangjeong and Dongnae. These changes, driven by urban population growth, show that the history of Yangjeong is connected not only with the growth of one parish but with the broader expansion of the Catholic pastoral network in Busan.

In 2007 the parish marked the fiftieth anniversary of its establishment and gathered its half-century of history into the volume Yangjeong Catholic Church: Fifty Years, 1957–2007, which was subsequently published. The work preserved the earlier mission-station period, successive periods of pastoral ministry, community activities, and the parish chronology for later generations. The historical importance of Yangjeong Parish lies in the way a parish born amid postwar urban growth helped give rise to new Catholic communities and expand the diocesan pastoral structure in central Busan.

The fiftieth-anniversary history was more than a chronology: it brought together the mission-station period, people associated with the parish, photographs, lay organizations, and changes in parish life. It shows the parish’s own effort to preserve its past and hand community memory on to later generations, and it has become an important secondary record for understanding the first half-century of Yangjeong Parish.
